What Can I Expect
Your ticket to ride the Churnet Valley Railway! Discover the most picturesque little heritage railway line you can imagine in the heart of Staffordshire. We have tickets for two, as well as family tickets (which are for two adults & two children, or two adults and one senior), to travel the line from Froghall to Ipstones and back.
The great thing about these ticket deals is that you're able to hop on and hop off along the way. You can depart on either the 10:30 or the 13:30 train from Froghall Station. If you do the journey in one go, it lasts approximately 2 hours, covering 22 miles, taking in tunnels, escarpments, climbs, junctions and stations.
Many visitors to Churnet Railway disembark at some point along the journey, so they can make the most of the stunning countryside. Why not alight at Consall Station? It's the jewel in the crown of this steam railway. Peaceful and quiet due to the remoteness (there's no access by car here), this sleepy little stop consists of a lovely wooden station building.
When at Consall, we can highly recommend a pause at the nearby Black Lion public house. And you can walk the lovely towpath, which takes you past the Flint Mill and alongside the Cauldron Canal and River Churnet to Cheddleton, where you can hop on a train again.
Cheddleton Station is also well-worth a visit. It's the headquarters of the Churnet Valley Railway association and location for many of the regular events held here. The main station building is a wonderful example of Victorian railway architecture (just look at those chimney stacks!) and lucky to still be standing, as many of the original buildings were demolished. Make sure you visit the small museum in this Grade II listed station and check out what's happening in the loco sheds too.
At Ipstones, all passengers remain in the train, whilst the loco ‘runs around' and re-hooks up to the carriages to start the return journey back to Froghall.
Froghall's lovely red brick building might look old, but it was actually built in 2003, as a faithful representation of what would have stood there. Take a peek inside and you'll find a very authentic waiting room and a superb award-winning tea room. What can possibly be better than a fresh brew and a cake whilst listening to the steam locos whistling and chuff-chuffing past the window? Buy your Churnet Valley Railway tickets online now!
