Detective Chief Inspector Vera Stanhope is not your usual detective. At first she seems rather grumpy, aloof even. But deep down she cares a huge amount about her work and her team (if she calls you ‘pet' she likes you). She drives a clapped out old Landy, wears a scruffy mac and a rain hat, but her mind is razor sharp.

From her Northumberland & City Police HQ, she steers her team to investigate grisly murders, many of which often involve crime scenes on atmospheric moors, isolated farm houses, blustery beaches and fishing ports.

The shows are based on the books written by crime fiction author Ann Cleeves. Ann lives in Whitley Bay, so she knows all about the dramatic Northumbrian scenery. And indeed, the production team picks the best locations for filming Vera as it is beautifully shot, with wonderfully moody music to accompany it.

These four-hour coach tours setting off from the city centre will take you to see these sights both in Newcastle-upon-Tyne and around Northumberland. You'll start as you mean to go on, with an impressive view of the famous seven bridges of Newcastle. After that, your host will guide you through the Vera filming spots you visit.

At each stop you'll be able to get off the coach to stretch your legs and take photos. There is some walking involved, but the maximum is around five minutes.
