Chinnor & Princes Risborough Railway Experiences

Ah yes this can be confusing! The name is Chinnor and Prince's Risborough Railway reflecting the fact that the cross-county line links Chinnor in Oxfordshire to Princes Risborough in Buckinghamshire along its scenic, heritage branch line. It is often known as either Chinnor Railway or Princes Risborough Railway.

The Chinnor and Princes Risborough Railway runs along the foot of the scenic Chiltern Hills, between the main operating base at Chinnor Station, which is in south Oxfordshire and Princes Risborough Station, which is in Buckinghamshire.

The main base at Chinnor Station is just off the B4009. If you're travelling by car, there is free on site parking for visitors. Traveling by public transport is easy, with mainline train serviced operated by Chiltern Railways to Princes Risborough Station.

The line opened in 1872 as the Watlington & Princes Risborough Railway. Passenger services ceased in 1957, but the line between Chinnor and Princes Risborough continued commercially as a freight line for chalk and cement from local industrial works. The goods line finally closed in December 1989. It has since been restored and operate by the dedicated team of volunteers to be the Chinnor & Princed Risborough Railway.

A return journey from Chinnor to Princes Risborough and back takes between 60 and 90 minutes in total, running through the picturesque Chiltern Hill over the border from Oxfordshire to Buckinghamshire.

As well as being the terminus on the heritage railway, Princes Risborough is also a mainline stop on the Chilterns Railway services between London Marylebone and Banbury and Aylesbury. There is a paid car park, as we as waiting rooms and toilets. 

Chinnor is the main base for the Chinnor & Princes Risborough, so there is plenty for all ages to explore. In the main building you'll find the station cafe and the gift shop including souvenirs and history books for sale. There is also free parking at Chinnor. Within an easy walk from Chinnor, you'll find Old Kiln Lakes children's play area, picnic spots and the historic Chinnor Beehive Lime Kiln.

The main operating season usually runs from Mothering Sunday in March, through to October, typically operating services on Sunday and bank holidays, with an increased timetable in school holidays, plus special winter events too.
