Wing Walking

Wing walking is quite a specialist subject, so you might have to travel a bit as there may not be a wing walking operator right near you. But given the high thrills with wing walking, it's going to be worth going the distance! We currently have wing walking experiences on offer in:

When you go wing walking, you climb up onto the top wing of a vintage biplane to be strapped into a specially-designed five-point harness. Once securely strapped in standing up and facing forwards, the plane will taxi and take off. The expert display pilot will perform low-level fly pasts and you'll be grinning like mad, whilst trying to wave with the rush of wind in your face!

All restrictions are noted in the full details section of each product page. There are limits on lower and upper ages, height and weight. On average, the plane will be travelling at between 80 and 110mph. Think back to what it was like when you put your hand out of the car window when you're travelling at around 50mph and that gives you a good idea of the force of the wind at 80mph!

The rules on medical certificates may vary from one operator to another, so please check the requirements list in the full details section of each individual product page. To give you an idea, our Kent operator only asks for a doctor's certificate for anyone aged between 66 and 75 (the upper age limit).

Vintage biplanes such as the Boeing Stearman (a close relation to the Tiger Moth) are most often used for these wing walking experiences. It's a thrill in itself to be in a classic aircraft like this, so imagine the utter elation of flying on the wing of it!

A highly-qualified, wing walking specialist pilot will be flying the plane. They all have many flying hours under their belt and have flown displays and shows around the country, if not the world.

Shouting down to the pilot won't be heard, so you'll be shown a series of hand signals to use to communicate with the pilot in the cockpit below you.

Some operators provide flying suits or fleeces (it can be cold up there!), but you still need to come dressed in close-fitting clothes (nothing baggy like a hooded top) and wear lace-up shoes like trainers (no heels, boots or flip flops!). Goggles and earplugs will be provided for you.

You most definitely can. In some cases, the more the merrier in order to create that ultimate wing walking air display atmosphere. Imagine doing a fly past just above the heads of 50 of your friends and family who will be cheering you on as you fly on the wing!

The plane will do lots of sweeping, low-level flypasts at between 100 and 700ft. When you realise that light aircraft usually cruise at around 1500ft on sightseeing flights, this is pretty low!

Generally, the standard display for first-time wing walkers does not include inverted aerobatic moves. Having said that, if you've already wing walked before, the pilot may offer to do some aerobatics, but this is subject to a number of factors and the pilot's decision is final.

The force of the wind is so strong, it'll take all your strength to lift up your arm to try and wave. Some people do manage a bit of an arm and leg wave, but it's a case of leaving the acrobatic moves to the professional wing walkers.

In a word, yes. Even with earplugs it's pretty noisy up there on the wing! And we'll be brutally honest with you here, with the force of the wind, your face will be a bit of a stinging, snotty mess by the time you land!

No! You might have seen this in the past at air shows when the wing walker climbs out of the cockpit and onto the wing whilst the plane is actually flying. For this experience, you'll be up there and strapped in before the plane leaves the ground.

Professional wing walkers who perform at air shows and displays around the country do a lot of training, as they are doing tricks in the air whilst the plane performs acrobatics, often in formation with another wing walking plane. For these wing walking experiences, you'll be shown all you need to know to be able to do your first wing walk.

It's pretty daredevil stuff, but all the safety precautions are taken and strictly adhered to. All operators meet the current CAA requirements to be able to offer wing walking flights to the general public.
