What Can I Expect

Get ready to discover the magic of the Scottish mountains in winter with this two-day Introduction to Winter Skills course. Designed for beginners, this hands-on experience will teach you the essential techniques needed to move more confidently and safely through snowy and icy mountain environments. Based in either Fort William, beneath Ben Nevis, or Aviemore in the Cairngorms National Park, you'll spend two full days learning out on the mountain rather than in a classroom.

During the first day, you'll build a solid foundation in winter mountain skills. Learn how to select the right equipment for winter conditions, practise essential ice axe and crampon techniques, and develop your understanding of moving safely across snow and ice. You'll also be introduced to winter navigation and the fundamentals of avalanche awareness, helping you understand the challenges and considerations involved in winter mountain adventures.

On the second day, you'll put your newly learned skills into practice across more varied terrain and longer routes. With your instructor's guidance, you'll bring together the techniques you've developed, gaining practical experience and valuable feedback along the way. With small groups of just 3–6 participants, there's plenty of opportunity for focused instruction and individual support throughout the course.

By the end of the two days, you'll have developed a practical foundation in winter mountain skills to build on as you continue your outdoor adventures. Whether you're looking to explore snowy landscapes or prepare for future winter mountain challenges, this course is a great place to start.
