What Can I Expect

Fly the low-level training routes of the 617 Squadron on the ultimate Dambuster Tiger Moth experience! Operating out of Sherburn Aerodrome, these WW2-themed flights last a glorious 75 to 90 minutes.

From the moment you step into the authentically-styled Dispersal Hut, you will be fully-immersed in 1940s aviation. Pop into the Windsock Bar for a cup of char, listen to some Glenn Miller songs on the wireless and get into the spirit before your flight.

Your pilot will go through aircraft checks and ground control procedures, with a walk around the Tiger Moth. Kitted up in your leather flying jacket, goggles and intercom, you’re ready for your Dambuster flight take off.

Flying enthusiasts will know that the Tiger Moth has no starter, which means the propeller has to be hand-swung to start the plane. As the team here at Sherburn says : “When you hear the shout ‘contact', the fun begins”.

As the engine comes to life, the Moth comes alive, ready to take a westerly heading away from Sherburn towards Derwent Reservoir.  On the way, you’ll pass by Emley Moor (a pilot’s favourite navigational landmark) and RAF High Flatts, the top-secret WW2 radio navigation station, before reaching Penistone, which marks the edge of the Peak District.

After glimpses of the ruins of the former farmstead used as target practice on the shores of Longsett Reservoir, you’ll swoop in over the incredible Derwent Dam.

This is where the Lancaster pilots rehearsed low-level flying just 60 ft over the water at around 230mph, to drop the ‘bouncing’ bombs. With these Dambusters Tiger Moth experiences, the people, planes and stories of this extraordinary World War Two mission live on. What an experience!
