What Can I Expect

Join a sword making workshop in the Yorkshire Dales! Spend the day at the forge learning how to fashion your very own decorative sword using traditional techniques. And yes, you get to take it home with you at the end of the experience!

When it came to swords used in Mediaeval battles, simplicity was key. Knights wielding super-heavy, ornate swords would get nowhere. It was all about the best blade shape, a good handle to grip and the perfect counterweight.

Fast forward several centuries and swords made today at Richard Walker’s forge still follow those rules and still keep to that same shape. Of course they are decorative these days, but any knight would be proud to have one in their hands!

You will be at this Yorkshire forge for a full eight hours, learning those age-old techniques to forge metal to make a sword. Host Richard will teach you every step of the way and you will be the hands-on ones actually doing the making. (Of course, your host and tutor is always on hand to assist).

What we love about this workshop is that you are allowed to create your own sword design, which can feature a cross-guard and pommel too, to your desired shape and length. You will be shaping and fitting a handle and you can even add a fuller, which is the groove you find on blades.

By the time your sword making workshop at this Yorkshire forge comes to a close, you’ll most probably be tired and a bit grubby, but absolutely elated that you made your sword all by yourself, from scratch! Impressive stuff.
