What Can I Expect

A three-day sword forging course in Wales - ideal for an in-depth look at the ancient craft of blacksmithing. Join this three-day course at the forge in Trevaughan near Carmarthen to learn how to make your very own decorative/re-enactment sword.

If you already have some experience of blacksmithing (having attended a taster or one-day course is ideal), these extended courses are the perfect next-step up. You will be taught more of the theory and learn more about the various techniques used by artisan blacksmiths.

Your host is Master Blacksmith Will. With a background in design, architecture and blacksmithing, this talented blacksmith opened his own forge in 2010. Since then, the business has been going from strength to strength, with bespoke commission work and training courses.

Will is a great teacher. Forging something as complex as a sword takes time, patience and hours of softening and hammering. Your blacksmith host will be there for you every step of the way, from selecting the billets of metal, to the sharpening and polishing final product.

Everything you need is in this Welsh forge, from the raw materials and tools, to the PPE and the cups of tea. The courses run over three consecutive days and combine a mixture of theory and practical work, helping you on the road to become a confident blacksmith.

Suitable For

  • Minimum age 16
  • Under 18s must be accompanied by a participating adult
  • A good level of physical strength and fitness is required
  • It is recommended that participants have had some experience of blacksmithing 
  • You will form part of a small group of up to 8 participants (generally 4)

  • Not suitable for spectators

Anything Else

  • Comfortable clothing should be worn (no nylon or synthetics) Jeans and T-Shirts are ideal
  • Safety boots or walking boots are suitable (no open-toed footwear)
  • There are lots of local hotel & B&B's should you wish to arrange accommodation
  • The forge is conveniently located only 1 mile from the town centre and 2 miles from the train station
