What Can I Expect
Enjoy a steam heritage day in South Wales at the Blaenavon Railway! Explore, ride the trains and have breakfast - it’s all included in our special visitor packages for two or four people.
As a guest of the railway for the day, you will be welcomed at Blaenavon’s main base at Furnace Sidings in the best possible way - with a breakfast roll and a cuppa (or even a glass of bubbles if you prefer!).
Your itinerary for the day includes a reserved seat in a carriage for a steam-hauled journey. After this 60-minute round trip, you are able to use your ‘rover’ ticket for the rest of the day to come and go along this delightful line as you please.
We highly recommend taking the train to the Big Pit branch line stop, to visit the National Coal Museum. Entry is free and it’s a fantastic place to discover the story of this coal mine that was in production from 1880 to 1980 and the neighbouring Blaenavon Iron Works too.
This UNESCO-listed Blaenavon industrial heritage area on the edge of the Brecon Beacons was at the forefront of the Industrial Revolution, but what really stands out is the camaraderie and spirit of the miners, told through interactive exhibits and personal anecdotes.
If you feel like venturing further, there’s also the Rhymney Brewery visitor centre, as well as wonderful walks (an e-guide is included in your package) to the likes of Garn Lakes and the Whistle Inn (Garn-Erw Halt).
