What Can I Expect

It’s all about the steam and the coal on these fascinating experiences at Pontypool & Blaenavon Railway! These great value packages combine heritage railway journeys and breakfast, with a visit to the Big Pit National Coal Museum, including a guided underground tour.

Focussing on the proud industrial heritage of this part of South Wales, your day will be spent stepping back in time, to explore what life was like when the Blaenavon Iron Works and the Big Pit coal mine (which opened in 1880 and closed in 1980) were fully operational, alongside the railway.

Starting at Furnace Sidings, you’ll be invited to board a steam train to the Big Pit branch line stop. Alight here for the Big Pit National Coal Museum, which gives an amazing insight into a former mine. Visit the locker room and read the personal anecdotes and stories, walk around the Bath House and enjoy an immersive theatre experience too.

The highlight of your visit is getting kitted out in helmet, headtorch and safety belt to take the lift cage down to 90 metres below ground into the mine, where there are 27 miles of tunnels. An experienced guide (often ex-working miners) will show you around,  explaining how miners worked - including trap doors and pit ponies!

Back up on top of the ground, you’ll be able to hop back on a train to continue your journey, first reversing up to the Whistle Inn stop, before running through Furnace Sidings and High Level to the last station at Coed Avon, ready for your return journey. You are welcome to hop on and off services during your day.

If there’s time and it’s on the day's schedule, you can also take a ride on one of Blaenavon’s diesel trains too. And there’s even an opportunity to explore the local UNESCO listed Blaenavon Industrial Landscape on foot, with easy-to-follow e-guides provided for you!
