What Can I Expect

Access to the Royal Mews with lunch or an afternoon tea at the five-star Royal Horseguards Hotel included! These wonderful packages for two give you tickets to see the finest collection of carriages, cars and coaches with a lovely dining option too.

The Grade I listed Royal Mews are located within the grounds of Buckingham Palace, which makes it a very cool place to visit in itself. Add to that the fact that these are working stables and you've got yourself a real insight into life and work at the world's most famous Royal residence.

Polished and shiny, the rows of tack hang on the stable walls. On the other side of the stable doors, the Windsor Greys and Cleveland Bays shake their manes and feed on hay. Hear the gentle canter of hooves during exercise time in the indoor riding arena. These beautiful mounts are the horses chosen to draw the Royal carriages and they are lovingly cared for at the Mews.

You'll also see the state carriages in the Royal Collection. Admire at the Diamond Jubilee State Coach. See the Australian State Coach, which was a gift from the country. Marvel at the miniature coach used by Queen Elizabeth II. Take a close look at the ceremonial outfits worn by the footmen and drivers.

Each exhibit is shown with details on what it is, what it is used for and by whom. There are even State cars housed in these arched stables - and that's because, even today, the Royal Mews department is responsible for all transport by road from Buckingham Palace. Fascinating stuff.

A highlight for most is the Gold State Coach. This is a seven-tonne, gilded masterpiece of craftsmanship. Unique in the world, this imposing carriage has been used for Coronations and was a pivotal part of the Platinum Jubilee celebrations in June 2022. Simply stunning.

Having explored the Royal Mews, your table awaits at the Royal Horseguards Hotel. Just a short walk from the Mews, you have the choice of afternoon tea, a sparkling tea or a two-course luncheon to enjoy in the opulent setting of the hotel's dining room.
