What Can I Expect

Get ready to take your first steps into the exciting world of outdoor rock climbing   on the beautiful Isle of Portland in Dorset. This one-day introduction course is perfect for beginners, as well as those who have tried climbing or bouldering indoors and are ready to experience real rock. Set against the dramatic limestone cliffs of the Jurassic Coast, you'll learn new skills, challenge yourself and enjoy spectacular views across the surrounding coastline.

Your day begins with an introduction from your climbing instructor, including an important safety briefing. You'll start with some warm-up bouldering before learning how to fit your climbing harness and helmet correctly. Your instructor will then guide you through the fundamentals of tying climbing knots and safely belaying your climbing partner, giving you the essential knowledge needed to get started.

Once you've mastered the basics, it's time to get climbing! You'll take on routes on impressive 40–60-foot limestone cliffs, learning how to use your hands and feet effectively, improve your body positioning and develop your climbing technique. As your confidence grows, you'll have the opportunity to try a variety of routes, including slab, vertical, crack and steep overhanging climbs, with the difficulty gradually increasing to suit your experience.

Throughout the day, your instructor will help you develop your skills, understand route grades and learn about climbing safety and etiquette. With a group size of just 4–8 participants, you'll have the opportunity to learn alongside others while receiving guidance and support from your instructor.

Portland's distinctive limestone cliffs, surrounded by the sea and rich in local history, provide a fantastic setting for your climbing adventure. By the end of the course, you'll have gained practical experience, learned the foundations of outdoor climbing and hopefully discovered a new passion for this rewarding sport.
