What Can I Expect
Shop your Nene Valley Railway ‘Discovery Day’ tickets here! Spend the day exploring this wonderful heritage railway with a steam train ride and a tasty breakfast treat included for all passengers.
Your experience starts at Wansford Station, the main hub of the Nene Valley Railway, with your bacon or sausage sandwich and hot drink. Your steam train journey will take you on a return voyage along the full track, lasting around an hour.
Having opened in 1845, the railway was an important cross-country link, transforming Wansford from a sleepy spot to a bustling train station. Passenger services ceased in 1964 and freight trains ran until 1972.
Thanks to the dedication of the Nene Valley Railway volunteers, steam and diesel trains happily run again along the eight miles of restored track between Peterborough and Yarwell - and there’s lots to discover!
As well as the loco sheds, workshops and 1907 working signal box at Wansford, you can explore the main station building, which houses the gift shop, ticket office and cafe, as admiring the original Jacobean-style station building on platform 3 that is under restoration.
Make sure you keep a look out for the Station Master’s Office at Wansford; this was the original wooden Barnwell station building that was moved lock, stock and barrel to Nene Valley!
Travelling alongside the River Nene, you will pass through lovely open green spaces and water meadows. These Nene Valley Discovery Day packages also include self-guided tour information so you can explore on foot the likes of Railroad Wildlife Haven, Ferry Meadows Country Park and Nene Park, all accessible directly from the railway line.
For a relaxed and thoroughly enjoyable day out with lots to see and do (and a nice little bite to eat to get your started) we think these Nene Valley Discovery Days are just the ticket!
