What Can I Expect
This is gliding near Swindon, but with a difference - you've got power! We are offering vouchers for 30 and 60-minute flights in a modern motor glider out of Sandhill Farm private airfield just outside Swindon.
For this sort of gliding, there's no need for a tug plane or a winch, because you get airborne under the aircraft's own power. It’s quite a thing to experience being in a self-launching glider, as you trundle along the runway for take off with that huge wingspan!
And rather than being released at a certain altitude, you simply fly up to the height you want to achieve, switch off the engine and get soaring. This is the moment you change from manmade to natural, with just the swirling noise of the wind that carries you.
Once you're up there, what can you expect to see? Well, this is another reason why this airfield at Sandhill Farm on the edge of West Oxfordshire is a popular place. When you're soaring in your motor glider, you are literally minutes away from the likes of the Vale of White Horse and Dragon hill just beyond.
It's so refreshing to see the best of the county from the air. You get to look down on any traffic jams (rather than be in them for once), whilst you glide gracefully at a few thousand feet above the picturesque towns and villages below.
Unlike most standard gliders, a motor version has a side-by-side cockpit, so you will be sitting next to your instructor. This gives you the advantage of being able to see everything that the pilot is doing, which we think helps you feel more secure, comfortable and at ease.
