What Can I Expect

Mainline diesel train driving in Derbyshire at Ecclesbourne Valley Railway! Our Silver and Gold experiences will get you driving a big diesel locomotive with a rake of three coaches attached, along this delightful heritage railway line.

Usually operated by a Class 33, 47 or 73, these experiences are all about the diesel power that these locos have always been known for. For decades they were the true workhorses of the mainlines, running passenger and freight services the length and breadth of the country.

And indeed, the first thing everyone on these mainline diesel train experiences comments upon is the feel of the torque and power behind when you are in the driver’s seat.

Driving a classic diesel is all about the levers. One notch and you wait for the amps to rise, then you can release the brakes. That’s when you feel the surge of power, pulling gently away from the platform.

Give it another notch and the loco responds, bringing more power to pull you and the coaches up the steady incline of the Ecclesbourne line. Carefully passing through level crossings, under bridges and in tunnels, there will even be sections of the track where you can accelerate, immersing you in that distinctive, powerful sound these vintage diesels make. On the Silver experience you will be part of a group rotating around the activities of driving, observing and a guided depot tour at Wirksworth.
