What Can I Expect
A taste of kayaking at Tees Barrage! Two hour kayak taster experiences at the International White Water Centre near Stockton-on-Tees. It’s time to get paddling!
Tees Barrage is a great location. Purpose-built for watersports with several courses, the water flow can all be controlled manually - and for these kayak sessions it’ll be nice and calm so you can get paddling with confidence.
You will be following the British Canoeing awarding body’s ‘Paddle Start’ course programme, which is aimed at those having their first experience of kayaking. Within your two hour experience, you’ll be coached in all the kayak basics.
You’ll learn how to get in and out of your kayak. You’ll learn about the paddle, how best to position yourself in the kayak and how to get moving. You’ll soon be paddling forward, backwards and turning too, There’ll even be time for some kayaking fun and games.
The instructors at Tees Barrage are a great team. They will encourage you and help you make the most of your time out on the water, whilst making sure you feel safe and confident in your ability.
And we have to say, facilities at Tees Barrage are great. Free parking, a watersports shop, lots of spectator areas, changing rooms and showers - and a fab cafe overlooking the water courses too.

Suitable For
- Minimum age 10
- Participants must be able to swim 25 metres unaided
- A minimum of 2 vouchers must be purchased for this experience
- You will form part of a group of up to 8 participants

- Spectators are welcome to come and watch
Anything Else
- Please bring swimwear and trainers, which you don't mind getting wet, a towel and a change of clothing
- Onsite shower and changing facilities
- Refreshments and snacks can be purchased from the on site cafe with views over the River Tees
- Lockers are available for 20p
