What Can I Expect

Herne Hill Velodrome Track Taster experiences! This is your chance to learn how to ride a banked track on a fixed-gear bike at the very lovely Herne Hill Velodrome.

We love this place. Run by cyclists for cyclists of all ages and abilities, HHV (as it is affectionately known) hosts events, tasters and training for everyone. We are focussing on the Adult Track Taster sessions for 14 years and older. As long as you can ride a bike, you can take on the open-air banked track!

Helmet and special track bike hire is included in the cost of the experience. Track bikes are called ‘fixies', as they are fixed-gear cycles. That means no changing gear and no brakes either. And that's what makes these tasters so fun.

The coaches at Herne Hill Velodrome are brilliant. They are super knowledgeable and really encouraging. During your session you'll learn the basic techniques of track cycling, building up confidence with every lap of the 450m-banked track.

And you'll be following in the slipstream of a whole lot of London track cycling history when you're on the HHV circuit. Built in 1891, Herne Hill attracted thousands of spectators to watch men's and women's cycling race events. The venue hosted the Olympics in 1948 and the likes of Laura Kenny and Jo Rowsell Shand have clocked up many track miles at Herne Hill.

In more recent years, a lovely new pavilion in the grandstands overlooking the track has been built. This is where you'll find the Velodrome shop selling everything from very cool HHV water bottles to cycling shirts. It's also where Jan's Cafe is for a snack and a coffee before or after you cycle.

Availability

  • Saturdays throughout the year
  • Sessions start at 13:30 finishing at 15:00
  • Dates are subject to availability and weather conditions
  • Participants should arrive 15 minutes before the session start time to complete the sign on process
  • Please note: The calander for sessions is currently available for bookings to September 2023.  Dates are added periodically and updated regularly

  • Participants should be confident riding a bike in a straight line without wobbling

Anything Else

  • Lycra is not required, although it is recommended that you don't wear anything too baggy
  • Layers are recommended, as well as a warm jacket for after your session
  • Please bring water and a snack
  • Helmets and gloves must be worn (you can bring your own or they will be provided for you)
