What Can I Expect
Family 'Runabout' Day at The Great Central Railway! This is your invitation to step back into the golden age of steam with a full day of heritage rail travel for the whole family.
From the moment you arrive at the station, you’ll be immersed in the nostalgic sights and sounds of Britain’s rich railway history. The platforms are beautifully restored and dressed in period style, creating an authentic atmosphere that feels like a real step back in time.
Your family 'Runabout' ticket offers unlimited travel across the eight-mile line through the heart of the Leicestershire countryside. You can choose to sit back and watch the green fields roll by or hop off at any of the heritage stations to explore.
Listen for the guard’s whistle and feel the rhythmic chugging of the coaches as your steam or diesel locomotive pulls away from the platform. Each station along the route has its own unique charm and character, offering plenty of opportunities for photos and discovery.
As the UK's only double-track mainline heritage railway, you might even experience the thrill of seeing two trains passing each other at speed. It is an exhilarating sight that never fails to impress both young adventurers and seasoned rail enthusiasts.
You will be welcomed by a friendly team of volunteers who are always happy to share stories about the locomotives and the line's history. Every ticket purchased helps this not-for-profit organisation preserve these magnificent engines and carriages for future generations to enjoy.
Whether you are visiting for a quiet weekday puff through the country or an action-packed day, the Great Central Railway offers a truly memorable experience. It is more than just a train ride; it is a chance to share a piece of living history with the people you love.
