What Can I Expect

Hand craft a knife or an axe during this forging workshop in Herefordshire! You'll spend the whole day at Oldfield Forge near the English/Welsh border, learning traditional forging techniques to be able to create your very own piece to take home with you.

Aaron and Nicky's family-run forge is in a lovely corner of the Herefordshire countryside. Set in well-established woodland, the forge is not far from the wild ponies of Garway, the Black Mountains and the Monnow Valley. There are even links to the Knights of the Templar around these parts, making your forging workshop like taking a step back in time. Indeed, the methods you'll be using have been around for thousands of years.

What we love about these courses is that you'll be making something that's not only beautiful to the point of being a work of art, but also practical. These knives and axes are totally meant to be used, but we can also understand it if you just want to admire your piece as a decorative artefact.

Knife-making requires a certain eye for design as you create the shapely blade, using traditional techniques. The sort of knives novice blacksmiths enjoy making at these one-day workshops include kitchen knives (the most popular pick for those who want a knife to use daily), hunting, bushcraft, fishing and woodworking blades. Aaron has even had pupils keen to make reenactment knives.

Making an axe head is intense and heavy work. You'll be taking a lump of metal, heating it in the open flame and getting the sparks flying as you hammer that hot metal. You can opt to make anything from a hatchet to a adze axe. And if you have time, you'll be able to craft the wooden handle to go with your axe head. Part of the process will be sharpening the axe head blade so that, with care, you'll be able to use it. And believe us, nothing beats chopping wood with an axe you made!

Intense and rewarding, these full-day forging workshops at this friendly Herefordshire forge give you a fantastic insight into the world of blacksmithing. Prepare to have all the sensations of touch and smell associated with this ancient art ignited!
