What Can I Expect

The next departure is the fish and chips train in Derbyshire! Enjoy an informal fish and chips boxed meal during a return steam-hauled journey on the Ecclesbourne Valley Railway, with standard and private compartment seating available.

Your train departs from Wirksworth Station in the picturesque Derbyshire market town of the same name. The Apollo Bar on platform 3 will be open for you to purchase any hot or alcoholic drinks you’d like to take onboard with you (we all love a cuppa with a chippy tea!).

Heading south on this heritage railway line, you’ll follow the course of the River Ecclesbourne, passing places like Shottle and Idridgehay, to arrive at the terminus at Duffield, alongside the mainline passenger trains.

Duffield is where your fish and chip takeaway meal will be collected. It’s served in a box, so you can tuck in on your return journey back to Wirksworth.

Of course, fish and chips is the classic offering, but you can also choose in advance to have battered sausage or halloumi.  All meals come with a bottle of water and a small snack too.

Seating for your round trip is reserved for you onboard one of Ecclebourne’s vintage 50s/60s carriages, with comfy seats and large tables. You will either be seated side-by-side on a table for four in the open-plan carriages, or you can opt for the voucher that gives you a private compartment.

With the return journey lasting around 90 minutes, travelling through delightful Peak District countryside, we think these relaxed and informal fish and chip steam train departures at Derbyshire’s much-loved Ecclesbourne Valley Railway are great fun!
