What Can I Expect
Classic and still the best - a steam train Sunday lunch at Ecclesbourne Valley Railway! We have vouchers for two, three or four passengers to enjoy luncheon on the move in Derbyshire.
The fully-restored Derbyshire Countryman open-plan dining cars are a delight. Lovely wood panelling, soft lighting, comfy armchair-style seating and tables neatly laid out with proper crockery and linen, just as it would have been at the height of travel by steam train.
You will be welcomed by the onboard waiting staff, who will show you to your seats for your traditional Sunday lunch departure from Wirksworth station. You will journey along this heritage railway that takes its name from the River Ecclesbourne that the line follows to Duffield.
The countryside views, on the edge of the Peak District, have hardly changed since the line opened in 1867 as part of the Midland Railways’ ambitious expansion plans.
With a puff of steam and whistle from the steam locomotive, you’ll be on your way, along the nine-mile track from Wirksworth, over two level crossings, through Idridgehay and Shottle halts, to Duffield for your first leg of your return trip.
Whilst you travel, your three-course Sunday roast with all the trimmings will be served at your table. Tea and coffee is included and there’s a fully-licensed bar for you to purchase drinks onboard.
The atmosphere is relaxed, jovial and convivial for these Sunday lunch steam departures on the Ecclesbourne Valley Railway. Make sure you book your table in advance, as these excursions are always popular!
