What Can I Expect

Drive a Class 08 Shunter at Ecclesbourne Railway in Derbyshire! Your chance to experience the power of the unsung hero of British Railways as you take a journey from Wirksworth to the Ravenstor stop.

This is a fantastic little experience. The Class 08 is an icon. These diesel electric locos were specifically designed for shunting duties. Compact and powerful, the 08 worked tirelessly in the sidings moving stock around where other locos were far too cumbersome for the job.

The Ravenstor branch line at the Ecclesbourne Valley Railway is the perfect showcase for the rugged Class 08. The line climbs continuously, culminating in a 1 : 27 gradient as you reach the Ravenstor stop.

Gateway to the High Peak Trail, it’s the summit of an impressive incline. Taking a break from crew duties, you’ll hear about the history of the Ravenstor line and the important role the Class 08s played (and in some cases still do!) on the country’s rail network, before hopping back aboard for your return journey.

Of course, what goes up must come down, so as driver of the Class 08, you'll need to be on the brakes for the descent. And indeed, you’ll have the GW-built Toad brake van attached, which was used as a safety brake on good trains.

Passing back under Cromford Bridge and Cemetery Lane Bridge, you'll travel pass the heritage railway’s worksheds to pull back into platform 3 at Wirksworth, where your wonderful Class 08 Shunter driver experience comes to an end.
