What Can I Expect

This is Army Truck driving at Gatwick - a unique military vehicle in the unique location of the air museum grounds! We have vouchers to drive the formidable Leyland DAF truck, with a Spartan tank passenger ride add-on option available too.

Leyland DAF has long since disappeared from vehicle manufacturing, but the name lives on with hundreds of military 4x4 versions of the 45/150 still stomping around tricky terrain all over the world.

The Daf 45/150 you will be driving has been configured as a troop carrier. These adaptable and agile trucks were produced in all sorts of versions for all sorts of tasks, because the load limit is a huge four tonnes.

Having said that, the DAF weighs in at over six tonnes. You might think that a truck that heavy would be a lumbering, slow vehicle, but no. This Leyland DAF has so much power and torque, you can even accelerate uphill with a full load.

No wonder the crew that hosts these experiences at the Gatwick Aviation Museum event field are fine about these trucks actually going on the 4x4 course. They can pretty much go anywhere!

What’s more, all participants get free entry to the air museum if it is open on the day you visit. And don’t forget, if you go for the army truck driving voucher with the Spartan ride, you get to experience full-tracked riding in the impressive Alvis Spartan tank too.
