What Can I Expect

Super rare Army Land Rover drives in Gatwick! Your chance to get behind the wheel of a Land Rover 90 ‘Piggyback’, one of the very few Landys purpose-built to be ‘stackable’ for air drop transport inside a Hercules!

You will meet this special vehicle in the event field at the Gatwick Aviation Museum. To the untrained eye, it looks like your typical, short-wheelbase, military grade Land Rover Defender 90. Time to take a closer look…

The crew down at this West Sussex venue will delight in showing you what makes these ‘piggybackers’ unique. In essence, they were purpose-built made in very small numbers, with folding sides, so they could be loaded into a Hercules stacked onto a ‘pallet’ and then dropped, attached to a parachute!

If you think of a line of fallen dominoes, these Piggyback Landys were stacked like that, with the front wheels of the Landy behind driven up to rest on the rear-wheel base of the Landy in front. Clever eh?

As you can imagine, very few of these Army Piggyback Land Rovers remain, which is what makes these experiences so notable (along with the fact that you are at the fantastic air museum at Gatwick!).

We are offering vouchers for you to have a drive in these agile Army Land Rovers at Gatwick, with an add-on available for you to take a ride in the super nimble Alvis Spartan tank as well!
