What can I expect on the day

Exclusive to Intotheblue - your chance to 'Sit in a Spit'! This is the only place you can buy your vouchers to be invited along to a unique experience at one of the country's most famous former RAF airfields. This is a real must for classic aviation fans, both the young and not so young and a great opportunity to get some cracking photographs.

Since 2011, the Heritage Hangar at Biggin Hill airport has been home to several airworthy Spitfires, as well as a collection of other fine vintage warbirds.  This exclusive experience gives you the chance to get up close to these simply wonderful machines and actually sit in one too. The Spitfire, which was nearly called the Shrew, was designed by RJ Mitchell, who sadly only lived long enough to see the prototype fly. We think if he could join you on this experience he'd be immensely proud of the place his Spitfires hold in the nation's heart and the emotive reactions they provoke in people.

As well as hangaring four flying Spitfires (Mk IV TA805, MK912, TD314 and MkXVI RW382) and the Hurricane MkI AE977, the talented team also undertakes restoration work, with two Spitfire airframes currently sitting in the hangar being transformed back to their former glory. You will get privileged access to see the works going on, without the restrictions of flight-line barriers and have plenty of time to ask questions and take pictures, so whether you've always wanted to know why the wings are elliptical, or where you find spare parts for those glorious Merlin engines, you can pose all your queries to the skilful technicians.

However, the highlight of this static experience has to be the moment you will realise your dream of sitting in the cockpit of the Mk9 Supermarine Spitfire TA805. This plane is well-known above the skies of Kent and beyond, as she often participates in air displays and it's a real thrill for any aircraft fan to be able to experience what it's really like in the 'hot seat' of a Spitfire. Don't forget, you won't find these 'Sit in a Spit' aeroplane experiences anywhere else! See the other spitfire experiences we have to offer on our main Spitfire flights page here.

Being a huge fan of planes, I bought my husband a spitfire experience from into the blue. The whole process was stress free and everyone we spoke to whilst booking it was very helpful. We travelled 2+1/2 hours to get to the location so we had high expectations. When we arrived, the tour guides were very friendly & knowledgable. The whole process from booking to having the experience was a joy and completely stressless and my husband was very impressed.
We will definitely be booking more experiences from into the blue. A****

fantastic well worth it spitfire guide was a star explained everything and took amazing pictures, organisation around it could be slightly better like signage guiding you to the hanger sat nav takes you to barrriers and a man who knows your wrong because it happens all the time, wife wanted to see me in the spit but wasnt allowed in even though i offered a donation(her gift to me)so wasnt happy,as i queued i noticed some other wifes etc had found there way into the hanger?!when id had my sit i retrived her from the car ,she needed the tiolet we went back inside i asked if she could use the tiolet same steward said yes go in the hanger and its in number 2 and let her in!i know its difficult with it being a working hanger health and safety etc but provision for the gift giver should be taken on board even from a proper veiwing gallery etc, even so i would highly recommend this experience they are making dreams come true and keeping these wonderful planes in the air!

Excellent!
The directions to and the facilities themselves were all first class. All staff were welcoming, very knowledgeable, connected and wonderfully patient of me. It also seemed to me that one could almost spend as much as one wanted in the cockpit -I was not pressured in any way to hurry up or terminate. Even my many 'nerdy' questions were answered with thought and care. I would recommend this Experience to someone else. Well Done.
