What Can I Expect

Scramble! Scramble! Scramble! This is the North Weald Airfield WW2 experience calling! Immerse yourself in the vivid history of this former RAF station with a wonderful visit including some very special activities to excite fans of historic aircraft.

After being welcomed to North Weald Airfield in Essex, your expert host will take you on a guided tour of the World War Two hangar, housing iconic aircraft you will know and love. Hearing about the wartime role North Weald played and seeing such aircraft as the Supermarine Spitfire and the T6 Harvard certainly brings that history alive.

Being able to climb inside the cockpit of the Spitfire and Harvard is a really special moment. You will also love the moment you meet the living legend that is ‘Drag ‘em Oot’. This 1944 C47 ‘Skytrain’ Dakota served in the D-Day operations, dropping paratroopers over the Normandy beaches and participating in Operation Market Garden too.

The second Dakota you'll meet has a commercial passenger configuration inside - you will probably know it as the DC-3, the first aircraft to fly transcontinental, worldwide passenger flights.

As part of your experience, you’ll be invited to board the plane and take your seat. The pilots will then take you taxiing along the runway at North Weald, feeling the acceleration pushing you back in your seat as you reach near-takeoff speed.

One can only imagine what it must have felt like for the hundreds if not thousands of WW2 soldiers who boarded C47s to head off on daring missions in this rugged, plucky and dependable aircraft.

You’ll experience the very real noise, the anticipation and all that goes with being in a vintage Dakota. After taxiing back and coming to a stop, you will have lots of time to meet the pilots and take photos after you disembark.

This WW2 experience at North Weald Airfield featuring the Dakota, the Spitfire and the Harvard is the perfect day out for fans of vintage aircraft, giving you a true ‘behind the scenes’ insight into wartime operations.
