What Can I Expect
Experience life on the edge when you go cliff camping! Spending the night suspended over a clifftop in a portaledge tent is quite possibly the craziest thing you’ll ever do, but the views and the sounds are incredible.
This specialist climbing and expedition company offers portaledge camping trips in several cliffside locations around the UK, including Pembrokeshire, North Devon, Dorset and Swanage. All offer amazing vistas out towards the sea.
The portaledge is a portable high-tech hammock that alpinists use to sleep overnight in the mountains. They’re a really clever piece of kit, suspended from a single anchor point, using ropes and karibiners. With the cover on at night, you’ll be cosy and warm, protected from the elements.
The first thing that’s sure to pop in your mind is ‘Is cliff camping safe?’. The answer is yes! Once you’ve got over your initial fear and apprehension about the fact that you are on what feels like a hammock on the side of the cliff, you will relax and get into the groove.
As you can imagine, you’ve got the prime seat for the sunset. And as the sun disappears behind the horizon and you snuggle down into your sleeping bag, the sound of the waves will send you to sleep. The sunset the next morning is a pretty awesome moment too.
Your expert instructor will guide you on the abseil down to the portaledge and get you comfortable. If you’re wondering about food when you cliff camp, a three course evening meal will be winched down to you, along with breakfast the next day!
Your instructor will never be far away (usually on the clifftop) but you will have your privacy to enjoy your night sleeping on the portaledge. If you fancy taking glamping to the next level, cliff camping is definitely right up there…literally!

Swanage - BH19
- The stunning coastline is home to some rare and threatened species which are dependent upon the thin limestone soils
- If you are lucky, you may get the appearance of some of the local seals
Pembrokeshire - SA62
- Pembrokeshire’s spectacular coastline is renowned worldwide with its sea cliffs among the finest
- Get the feeling of being poised on the very edge of nowhere, a place exclusively inhabited by circling sea gulls and diving seals
Dorset - DT5
- Part of the Jurassic coast Dorset is important for its geology and landforms
- Sea and migratory birds occupy the cliffs, and it's one of the most dramatic and scenic landscape areas in southern Britain
North Devon - EX33
- The North Devon coastline has been designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty
- With its beautiful sandstone cliffs rising from out of the Atlantic Ocean, these are views you will never forget
Suitable For
- Participants must be at least 18 years old
- A reasonable level of fitness is required to abseil and move on the rock face
- There is a combined weight limit of 200Kg for the two of you on the portaledge
Anything Else
- Please wear warm, layered outdoor clothing and sturdy footwear
- A recommended kit list is provided when booking your date typically some personal kit, a rucksack, a water bottle, a head torch, and camera
- All sessions are weather dependent for safety
- Your instructor(s) will be nearby throughout the whole experience. In case you need any kind of assistance or reassurance
