What Can I Expect

A fabulous Pontcysyllte Aqueduct canoe trip! Explore this UNESCO World Heritage site by canoe, as you paddle along this amazing structure that sees the Llangollen Canal cross the River Dee.

This really is open canoeing with a difference. The Pontcysyllte Aqueduct is amazing. It's impressive when you look up at those 18 arches. It's the highest canal aqueduct in the world at 126ft above the ground. It's also the longest in Great Britain, stretching across the Vale of Llangollen for 336 of your finest yards.

So just imagine actually being in a canoe paddling across that 12ft-wide run of water on the aqueduct as part of a lovely trip out taking you along the aqueduct and beyond!

You'll need a head for heights for this Pontcysyllte Aqueduct expedition by canoe, but no previous paddling experience is needed. As long as you're confident in water, you'll be able enjoy this most unusual way to see this Grade 1 listed structure that was designed by none other than Thomas Telford.

The team who'll be taking you on this Pontcysyllte Aqueduct canoe outing is based in Llangollen. Transport to and from the departure point is included for all paddlers and is usually in and around the area of the wonderfully-named Trevor Basin (who's Trevor?!), with its cafes, pubs and visitor centre.

The canoes you'll be taking over the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct are called Open Canoes. There's a little wicker bench seat at the bow (front) of the boat and another at the stern (back), so you'll be paddling in tandem. If you book two vouchers, you will take a canoe together. Individuals will be paired up on the day to share a canoe.

With tons of local knowledge, excellent canoeing and coaching skills, you're sure to have a fantastic time on your guided paddle. Pontcysyllte Aqueduct canoe trips operate all year round and last around 2.5 hours. One of the most unusual canoe itineraries in the whole of Wales, we think you'll love it!
