What Can I Expect

Fun and friendly flying lessons at Sheffield’s Netherthorpe Airfield! We are offering 15, 30 and 60-minute experiences in two seater aircraft out of this lovely little airfield on the South Yorkshire/North Nottinghamshire borders.

In a quiet little corner not that far from Worksop, you'll find Netherthorpe Airfield. Quite possibly one of the best kept small airfields we have come across, this perfectly formed aerodrome attracts flying fans from Sheffield, Rotherham, Nottinghamshire and North East Derbyshire for lessons.

Flying has been happening here since 1933, when a group of pilots got together to fly their Tiger Moths from the fields. After a brief stint as an RAF base, civil aviation has been at Netherthorpe since 1961 when the first Sheffield aero club arrived.

All pilots hosting lessons out of Netherthorpe are fully CAA accredited with many, many hours of flying in their logbooks. The team is really friendly and welcoming, with the aim of giving you a flying lesson to remember. Indeed, it has been said that you never forget your inaugural lesson in a plane, just as you never forget your first solo flight.

Right from lesson number one, you'll get a chance to actually fly the aircraft yourself. A ground briefing before your flight will explain how your experience will pan out and the basic controls of the aircraft. Then it's time to head out to the plane, which will be a two seater light sports aircraft. It’s time to fly!

We think the well-placed, discrete and welcoming Netherthorpe Airfield, with pleasant farmland surroundings, is a superb place to discover flying with easy access to lessons from Sheffield, Nottingham and Derby areas. Book your slot now!

Availability

  • Tuesdays to Sundays (closed Mondays) throughout the year, subject to weather conditions and availability
  • Although time slots are allocated please be aware that aircraft lessons are subject to a number of factors which may potentially cause delay to your scheduled time
  • Whilst every effort will be made to help keep you on time we ask for a degree of latitude owing to the nature of flying, air traffic delays and weather considerations

  • Spectators are welcome to attend and watch participants in flight with plenty of great photo opportunities
