What Can I Expect
On this sheepdog experience in Cheshire you’ll meet the working dogs, the sheep and the farming family too! Spend a morning or afternoon at the sheep farm near Macclesfield learning how to be a shepherd on these wonderful experiences.
The Gilman family has been sheep and beef farming at Pye Ash farm for several generations. Passionate about showcasing British farming and where our food comes from, the family loves to welcome visitors to the farm for these sheepdog experiences.
Having working dogs is par for the course when you’re a sheep farmer. And in fact, farmer James has won ‘One Man & His Dog’ and is England sheepdog trial champion multiple times over, as well as representing Great Britain at International Sheepdog Trials.
After a warm welcome to Pye Ash, it’s time to meet the gang. These beautiful, intelligent and happy Border Collies will be dying to meet you too. Your new furry friends will absolutely love showing you the ropes when it comes to herding sheep in the field.
And we have to say, sheep are funny little things and tricky to control (hence the saying ‘like herding sheep’) and given half a chance, they’ll be scurrying off into the next field in search of some tasty grass.
With the help of farmer James and his trusted canine team, you will learn how the dogs respond to voice commands and whistles, as human and canine work in coordination to herd the sheep to where they need to go.
It’s fascinating to watch and even more amazing to take part in. And the farm, on the edge of the Peak District between Macclesfield and Congleton, is in a stunning setting too.
Leaving the farm with your Pye Ash merchandise, your shepherd’s whistle and a huge smile on your face, you’ll love the time you went on a sheepdog experience at this Cheshire farm!
