What Can I Expect

Clay shooting on the Matfen Estate in Northumberland! Take aim at the ‘birds’ on this extensive farm estate near Hexham, just a 20-minute drive from the centre of Newcastle, with easy access from Durham and Teesside too.

The outdoor adventure crew based on the Matfen Estate has been organising and operating outdoor activities since the early 1980s and each of them loves what they do, so you’re in for a warm welcome, with lots of fun, whilst being in a totally safe environment.

The clay shooting range is outdoor. For these taster sessions you’ll be aiming at 25 clays with 25 cartridges. There will be a safety briefing and, especially if it’s your first time, a full rundown on how to handle and shoot the gun.

This Matfen operator has 12-bore as well as the lighter 20-bore shotguns, so there will be a gun to suit your build, with the minimum age at this centre being 14 years old.

Once feeling confident in handling the gun, you will head out to the stands to get ready for your series of flying ‘birds’. Quick as a flash the clay will be soaring through the sky. Track, take aim and release that trigger!

As you progress, instructors will be on hand to help you improve your aim and score. The more times you see that clay being smashed to pieces, the more satisfying it is.
