What Can I Expect
Fixed-winged fun when you go microlighting in Devon! This small, but perfectly formed microlight school is based at Dunkeswell Airfield in East Devon, tucked in right next to the beautiful Blackdown Hills, making it a lovely airfield to take off from.
Headed up by Jim Greenshields, these guys know a thing or two about microlights as they sell, build, maintain, store and offer training in a range of fixed wing microlights. Jim started flying hang-gliders in 1978 and has flown everything from gliders to vintage aircraft, clocking up many thousands of hours of experience on over 200 aircraft types in countries around the world.
It's fair to say Jim lives and breathes microlighting and we're sure his enthusiasm will rub off on you. It's no surprise that Jim has settled at Dunkeswell Airfield as it's in a truly superb spot, just five miles north of Honiton and 15-miles north-east from Exeter. Within minutes of taking off, the incredible Jurassic Coast is in sight.
These trial flights over Devon are operated in one of the school's fixed-wing microlights; typically the Icarus C42. At first sight, these aircraft look like traditional planes, as they use ailerons, rudders and elevators to control pitch, yaw and roll, with a control stick and two pedals inside the closed cockpit - but they're much, much lighter. They're also great to fly.
All experiences start with a welcome and pre-flight safety briefing. You will then head off on your flight, showing you the joys of microlighting over the Devonshire countryside and the south coast, as you soar gracefully like a bird. If you feel like giving it a go yourself, you will be able to take the controls, or you can just sit back and enjoy the ride, it's totally up to you.
