A ‘National Day’ that literally takes the biscuit!

What are you going to be doing on Tuesday 21st July 2015? We can categorically say we will wholeheartedly be celebrating National Junk Food Day! Yes, it’s time to forget the cholesterol levels for one day and treat yourself to some of that naughty but nice junk food fodder.

Of course, it’d be irresponsible of us to condone a high-fat, high-sugar diet all year round, but for just one day we think we can treat ourselves, so it’s goodbye fibre and hello saturated fats – but which fast-food delight will we plump for?

fish and chips

It seems our tastes in fast foods are quite literally changing, as fish and chips is no longer the number one takeaway food in the UK. Mind you, being northerners at heart, we have to say fish and chips anywhere south of Watford Gap is just isn’t worth ordering, so it’s little wonder Chinese is now the nation’s favourite take-out.

Here’s the top five in full for you:

– Chinese 25%
– Indian 23%
– Fish and Chips 22%
– Pizza 14%
– Fried Chicken 4%

So these stats got us thinking. How much do Brits fork out on fast food every year? Well, it’s a staggering £29.4 billion, yes, billion! That’s the equivalent to each adult spending over £1300 per year on an average of 12 meals a month. That means we like to tuck into our fast food a lot more than just once year on National Junk Food Day!

But hey, in for a penny in for a pound as they say, so why not double up on the celebrations by combining your one-day calorie binge on those bad fats with something else health experts love to hate (or should that be hate to love?) – wine?

Wine isn’t only for accompanying a fancy meal in a Michelin-starred restaurant, your can match those fermented grapes with all sorts of dishes, including your favourite Madras or that lovely Aromatic Duck to name but two.

And this is where IntotheBlue.co.uk comes in, with a range of brilliantly fun and unpretentious wine tastings and tutorials where you can learn all you need to know to be able to peruse the wine aisles in the supermarket and make the perfect choice whilst you’re waiting to pick up your Four Seasons pizza.

If you want to go one step further, you can even get right into the heart of the matter with a vineyard tour to see the whole process from growing the vines, to putting the corks in the bottle.

But back to the essence of National Junk Food Day. All hail the 21st July when we can pop out to our local greasy spoon and rejoice in a guilt-free all day breakfast, followed by a burger for lunch before picking up a chippy tea on the way home, accompanied by a nice chilled glass of carefully chosen rosé wine perhaps…
