What is Geocaching – And How Can I Do It?

Here at IntotheBlue HQ we love experiences. The more adventurous, the better. Although we provide all our experiences at a price, we do realise the need for free(ish) things to do. That’s why when we came across Geocaching.com we were in awe.

What is Geocaching?

The definition of geocaching is simple. It’s the process of finding hidden treasures or objects using a tracking system. The most notable being, the popular GPS (Global Positioning System) tracker.

What Geocaching.com has done!

Taking this simple concept of Geocaching, these guys have scattered objects, treasures and prizes across the UK. From there they have created an app, which you download and away you go. From such a simple idea they have created a free fun finding adventure. With Over 2 Million active geocaches, there’s really something to find near you wherever you’re based.

What do the treasures look like?

Interestingly this can literally be anything from boxes of toys to  branches! The video below is an explaining of how your adventure might look….

My Example:

To help explain how easy it is and what additional features Geocaching.com provide below you’ll find an example of my London search.

Here you can see at the busy Nelson Column in Central London – there’s a hidden object.

As you can see from this example there’s different difficulty levels for finding the treasures.

Once you select the option, you are also provided with some history of the location and even tasks. Once completed many of the members go on to the site to upload pictures and comments via social media channels.

What’s the (Geo) Catch?

The basic format is free but like all apps there’s a premium service for £7.99 or £24.99 annually. What you’ll receive in the premium service is extra locations of treasures, advance mapping (essentially, more assistance)

Is there anything similar out there?

Of course there is! That’s where we come in. At IntotheBlue.co.uk we have a section dedicated to outdoor survival skill and bushcraft. From £10 we offer a slight different outdoor experience. The bushcraft and survival days out throw you more into the deep end. You’ll be taught all the skills required to survival on the landscape around you. As well as the traditional map reading, you can learn to start fires, build shelters, what to eat and more importantly what not to eat. It all sounds very Bear Grylls. Oh wait, we sell Bear Grylls Experiences too! At the top end of pay scale (£349 and £999) you can experience extreme survival. With the more expensive of the two having a high probability of meeting Bear Grylls himself! To view the weird and wonderful Bushcraft and Survival Skills click here.

Whatever you choose the adventures are out there and we’re always here to help…
