Hull’s The Place to Be!

Nashville, Vancouver and Seoul are just a few of the cities you can expect to see in the Rough guide 2016 places to visit list. However, there is one inclusion that has appears to have swept the rug from under our proverbial feet. The city of Hull, in Yorkshire, has bagged itself a place in the world’s top 10 cities to see. This is all well and good, but what exactly is there to do in Hull? Well, if there’s one thing we love its experiences – so here are a few you could try on your stay in this newly crowned hotspot.

The picturesque surroundings of Yorkshire make for a brilliant place to enjoy both the countryside and the city. One of the best ways to take in this countryside is from the skies with a birds-eye view, for which a microlighting experience would do the trick. Not only will you have a great opportunity to see the sights, but you’ll also be flying! It’s a win-win.

If keeping your feet on the ground is more you’re thing, and you prefer wheels to wings – you could try your hand at a driving experience.  If, like Hulls very own Vic Wilson, you want to test your skills in the driving seat a rally driving day might be a good way to do it. Equally, drifting has become increasingly more popular over the last year or so; and is a particularly handy skill when driving in slippery conditions! With locations in the Hull area, this could be an interesting thing to try if you’re looking for a new experience.

Hull is also city that is big on sport. Home to the Hull Tigers, Hull F.C Rugby club as well as a Cricket Club, it’s a place with a rich sporting history. If you picked the right time to visit – a weekend in most cases – you could experience the thrill and atmosphere of a match in the English Championship or Rugby League.  Even if you’re timing has squandered the chance to see a match, all may not be lost. The KC Stadium offers tours of the ground, including the chance to see the changing rooms, sit in the dugs outs and experience the ground from pitch side.

One of the most famous landmarks in Hull is the winding river Humber that meanders right through the city. Depending on what you’re looking for, there are many experiences that the river can provide. For instance if you prefer an all killer no filler approach, a speedboat ride hurling through the river at superfast pace might be a good way to pass the time. Alternatively if you fancy something slightly less loud, a gentle cruise down the river over a lovely lunch might be a better fit for the occasion.

As unexpected an addition to the 2016 Cities to Visit list as it is, Hull is a place with a lot to offer in terms of experiences. It also shows that the best places aren’t necessarily the ones that initially jump to mind when planning a trip away, so here’s to Hull!
