What Can I Expect

Vintage barge sailing excursions with a cream tea included! Set sail for a two-hour afternoon cruise with a delicious traditional tea served onboard the barge as part of your experience.

Departing from Hythe Quay in the Essex maritime town of Maldon, you will be sailing on ‘Reminder’, a fully-restored vintage barge. Originally built as a cargo barge in 1929, this vessel is a living, working reminder of Britain’s industrial heritage.

No longer sailing the waterways loaded with merchandise, Reminder is now a familiar sight in the Blackwater Estuary operating short leisure cruises and day trips. It’s a lovely part of the world to discover from the water, as you gently glide along the River Blackwater.

During your two-hour sailing you will see Northey Island, which is a bird sanctuary managed by the National Trust. You will then head alongside Osea, which is a private, habited island frequented by the rich and famous!

Navigating the River Blackwater as well as Southy and Goldhanger Creeks is relaxing, with superb views across salt marshes and towards the mouth of the estuary.

Make sure you take time whilst onboard to head below deck to check out the story of Reminder, illustrated with memorabilia and artefacts from across the years.

And of course, no cream tea cruise would be complete without sitting down to enjoy a freshly-baked scone with cream and jam, as well as cakes and a proper cuppa. There’s also a staffed onboard bar where you can buy drinks.

Setting sail at 12:30 and returning around 14:30, these vintage barge sailing experiences with cream tea included for all passengers is a great way to while away a couple of hours on the calm waters of the Blackwater Estuary.
