What Can I Expect

Discover the islands of the Blackwater estuary on these vintage sailing barge trips from Maldon in Essex! Setting sail from Hythe Quayside, we are offering morning and sunset departure times for these wonderful experiences.

Vintage sailing barge ‘Reminder’ was built in 1929 as a cargo barge. She has now been fully-converted, with cabins, lounge, dining and kitchen onboard. She’s moored in Maldon and is the ideal launch for relaxing barge sailing around the estuary.

Highlights for many passengers on these barge trips are the estuary islands. Osea is a private island, which has seen more than its fair share of celebrity guests, attracted to the island for its peace and tranquility.

Northey Island is a bird sanctuary managed by the National Trust. It’s an absolute haven for birds and wildlife, with the soothing sound of birdsong mixing with the sound of the waves.

Although accessible at certain times via causeways, sailing around these isolated islands gives you the best viewpoint by far. It’s fascinating stuff, filled with stories of shipwrecks and ancient battles, a far cry from the peace you’ll encounter today.

Onboard your vintage barge, you’ll be able to relax on deck, take in the views and sea air, as well as head below deck to take a look at the gallery, which shows the story of this historic restored barge.

For a Maldon barge trip with a difference, these vintage barge sails around the Blackwater Estuary are a fabulous way to discover this hidden gem of the Essex coastline!
