Open skies, open cockpit and open to the elements - that's microlighting in Bedford for you! This is quite possibly the most elementary form of flight there is, but that certainly doesn't mean it's not exciting. In fact, quite the contrary - getting airborne in a flex wing microlight truly captures the spirit of early aviation and you'll feel like a true pioneer of the skies above Bedfordshire.
Your microlighting partner for these Bedford-bound aerial sorties is Tony Hope. Trained himself by a World Champion microlight pilot, Tony is so passionate about his flex-wing microlight flying that it's thoroughly infectious. An unfailing sense of humour, coupled with endless patience, bags of enthusiasm and a wealth of experience, we can't think of anyone we'd rather have sitting behind us in the flex wing microlight!
Tony's microlighting set up in Bedfordshire may be small, but it's perfectly formed. He uses a modern Quik GT450 from P&M Aviation (Britain's leading flex wing microlight designer and manufacturer) that is well-maintained to all current CAA standards and equipped with all the gear, including state of the art FlyCom helmets with integrated intercom, so you can talk to each other in flight, rather than hollering over the microlight's engine noise.
You too will be properly geared up for your inaugural mission into microlighting over Bedfordshire. Some of the best weather conditions for flying flex wing microlights are during the winter months when it's crisp and cold, but with little wind. Cue you being kitted up in a fully insulated flying suit and gloves, so you too can enjoy this back-to-basics aviation activity all year round too. Brilliant!
And yes, although it's a microlighting taster lesson, the views of Bedford and the countryside beyond from your open-air cockpit is sure to take your breathe away. You are welcome to bring a camera along too so you can snap those panoramas, or you can just concentrate on the job in hand - having a go at flying this ultralight aircraft.
An extra little touch we love about these microlighting Bedford experiences is the fact that you can have your whole flight filmed too. Either bring along your own SD card or buy one on arrival at the base and capture all the aerial action as you take to the Bedfordshire skies in your flex wing microlight and swoop through the air like a bird.
