What can I expect on the day

Fancy some gyrocopter training from an ex Royal Air Force Squadron Leader? That's exactly what's on offer with this duo of gyrocopter experiences. In fact, we think it's one of the best schools in the UK to go to for discovering the wonders of gyroplanes!

We reckon you couldn't be in better hands than those of Ian 'Arfur' Bryant, MBE. His first take off was in 1977 and since then he's clocked up thousands of hours flying all over the world. After retiring from the Royal Air Force, Ian settled in Somerset and started flying gyrocopters - about as far removed as possible from modern high tech military aircraft as you can get, but, as Ian says, these machines are brilliant fun.

Gyrocopters, or gyroplanes as they are also known, use a clever mix of unpowered rotor blades over your head that provide lift with thrust from the engine-driven propellor at the back of the gyroplane. In essence it's a bit of a mix of a helicopter and a light aircraft - but it's most definitely open-cockpit, so prepare yourself for the wind in your hair and a smile on your face, as they say. In fact, those in the know when it comes to gyro training liken them to being on an airborne super bike - now that sounds pretty cool doesn't it?

Now we've got your all psyched up for going gyrocopter flying, let's tell you more about where. Indeed, that's the beauty of these small, agile, easily transportable and economical to fly gyrocopters - they don't need much of a runway to take off. So with this gyrocopter training school, you can choose Henstridge in Somerset, St Athan in South Wales, or even a local airport to you subject to a small supplement. This is if it's within 30 miles of base, so around Somerset and even some parts of South Wales are covered.

No matter which airfield you choose, your gyrocopter experience will follow the same format, starting with an on-ground briefing, including an introduction to the aircraft that's made by the UK's leading gyroplane manufacturer, Rotorsport.

Depending on the voucher chosen, your total flight duration will be 20 or 40 minutes. On the shorter flight you can sit back and relax or have a go at the controls. On the longer sessions your gyrocopter training could go up a level to more advanced moves, it's up to you!
