What Can I Expect
Learn bushcraft in Bristol! These fun bushcraft skills workshops take place in a lovely countryside setting in Westerleigh. We are offering a two-hour taster session and a four hour experience for everyone, with both classes suitable from the age of seven.
The brains behind these bushcraft experiences are Dan and Jodi. Passionate about the great outdoors and keen advocates of outdoor learning, they both love teaching their bushcraft skills here in Bristol. They’ve created a superb little basecamp, which is on the edge of the Windmill Leisure and Fisheries estate, where there’s everything you need to learn all those essential outdoor survival skills.
As well as a private camp site, there’s a six-acre activity field, an archery range, a woodland copse, a campfire circle and a ‘mess tent’ which serves as the refreshments base during these experiences. And of course, there are toilet facilities and lots of parking too.
The aim of these bushcraft courses in Bristol is to be as inclusive as possible and get all ages involved and working as a team together. To this end, group sizes are kept reassuringly small, with a maximum of six participants on each session. This gives everyone plenty of chance to be hands-on and there are lots of things to do and challenges to undertake.
One of the habitual favourite activities is starting a fire without matches. Faces just light up when the smoke turns to flames! But before all that, you’ll need to play hunter gatherer, going off in search of the right firewood. Wood is a key resource and you’ll learn about tree identification, along with knife skills and you can try your hand at wood whittling too.
Once the fire’s going, there’s only one thing to do - and that’s cook on it! On the taster bushcraft skills experience you’ll create delicious sweet or savoury camp fire snacks. On the four-hour session, Jodi (otherwise known as the Mary Berry of outdoor cooking) will be teaching you how to prepare a full campfire lunch. It could be skinning a rabbit for a stew, gutting fresh fish, preparing jacket potatoes to cook in the embers or helping with the dessert. And we have to say, nothing beats a crumble baked in a pot over the campfire. Simply delicious!
If you’re looking for a few hours of fun in the outdoors that’s totally accessible for all ages, bushcraft in Bristol as this relaxed and friendly Westerleigh basecamp is the perfect choice. Kids and adults alike will love it and everyone gets involved, learning lots as you go.
