What Can I Expect

Join artist David for a blacksmith day in North Yorkshire! Set in the very heart of the North Yorkshire Moors, between York and Whitby, this full-day of blacksmithing is a real delight, with lots of hands-on experience included too.

David Stephenson swapped life in education to be a full-time artisan blacksmith. He leads a rather bucolic existence in his 17th century stone cottage, with a workshop affording views across the Newton Dale and Cropton Forest. And when the wind is blowing in the right direction, you can even hear the whistle of steam trains on the North Yorks Moors railway!

Indeed, the nature-rich environment in this wonderful corner of the Moors inspires David in his metalwork every day. Working for both public and private commissions, David loves creating contemporary designs, using the age-old traditional methods - proving that practical can mean modern and stylish too!

You’ll be invited into the forge to learn the essential skills and techniques for working the hot metal by hand, using traditional methods. In the morning, you’ll be tapering, bending, punching, twisting and riveting that hot metal, crafting a variety of bespoke hooks. In the afternoon, you’ll develop those skills to create something more complex, such as a fire poker.

What pupils love about this one-day course is the fact that you will be hand-forging several items, all of which are totally practical. So rather than gathering dust on the shelf, you can take them home and actually use them!

With all the tools and raw materials, as well as a light lunch (homemade soups, bread, cheeses and fruit) all included, we think these blacksmith days in North Yorkshire certainly hit the (hand-forged) nail on the head. You can buy a voucher for one, or choose a voucher for two and invite someone along to this Yorkshire forge with you.
