Creative with Glass in London

Stoke Newington, London

Experiences Flash element

These one day stained and fused glass classes are held in a charming studio in the Stoke Newington area of London - an area renowned for artists and creative types. The workshops provide a perfect introduction in how to craft your own pieces of stained glass or fire bowls and plates using the more contemporary skill of fusing glass.

Not only will you learn new and creative skills side by side with accomplished artists, you will also create your own piece of glass as a wonderful souvenir of your day.

One Day Stained Glass Class
The course will provide a practical overview of the complete stained glass making process. The day will begin with the design process and the creation of a full scale drawing.  You will then be shown how to cut the different coloured and textured glass pieces to size and shape, before stretching and cutting the lead to fit around them. The panel is completed by soldering the joins, cementing the glass firmly in place and polishing it.

Throughout the day you will learn how to use some of the specialist glazing tools, some of which have hardly changed in hundreds of years. They include lead and oyster knives, grozing pliers and glass cutters.

One Day Fused Glass Class
Fused glass is a more recent craft, which creates a wonderful interplay of colours, shapes and textures by fusing together different layers of glass at high temperature in a kiln. The course will demonstrate the wide range of possibilities fusing glass offers to create decorative bowls, plates and abstract forms. At the end of the day you will have an A4 sized piece of stained glass to take home.

Before you begin, you will be taken through the basic theory of fusing, looking at the compatibility of different kinds of glass, the different firing phases in the kiln, and the process of making moulds and achieving different decorative effects.

The emphasis is on practical and creative work and your tutor will keep a close eye to help you achieve the best results and by the end of the day, you will have prepared a kiln shelf ready for your work to be fired and turned into bowls or glass shapes. The firing process takes up to two days to complete, so you can make arrangements to collect your finished piece or have it forwarded to you as appropriate.

Numbers are limited to four students for each class, ensuring everyone taking part will benefit from personal attention from the tutor. All materials and tools are provided and the items you make are yours to keep at the end of the course.

Courses typically run from 1000 to 1630 on Saturdays and all materials are provided. Courses are held throughout the year on Saturdays unless there is a group of four in which case it can be run during a week day.

Courses are open to anyone over the age of 13 with good eyesight and able bodied. The stained glass course is a fairly physical activity and is unsuitable for wheelchair users as the workshop is small and benches are fixed in height. The stained glass course involves some potentially messy processes so you are advised to wear comfortable clothes and shoes that you don't mind getting dirty.

The class is not suitable for spectators. Coffee, tea and biscuits will be provided. Lunch is not included but there are plenty of cafes nearby. Stoke Newington is well served by local London rail and bus services and parking is available outside the studio for those travelling by car.
