Here's your chance to enjoy a flying lesson in a vintage Chipmunk aircraft. The plane was the first post-second world war aircraft to come out of the de Havilland stable. Aiming to replace the incredibly successful Tiger Moth biplane, the Chipmunk soon became a favourite training aircraft favourite of the Royal Canadian Airforce and the RAF.

Your nostalgic vintage flight starts with a briefing during which the pilot will run through safety considerations and explain what you are going to do during the flight. Then, with foot and handholds pointed out you will climb into the front cockpit and one of the ground crew will assist you to strap into the surprisingly comfortable seat.

Next you'll be handed a flying helmet. Communication with the pilot is remarkably easy through the intercom and the noise of the Chipmunk's engine is deadened by the headphones.

Your pilot will demonstrate a few gentle turns and then it'll be your turn. Within minutes you'll actually be taking the controls of a genuine vintage de Havilland Chipmunk plane - who'd have thought that'd be possible!

The Chipmunk is also capable of a range of aerobatics, time permitting and subject to air traffic your pilot will usually be happy to demonstrate some more exciting manoeuvres.

Experience summary: All experiences start with a briefing session with your pilot. After getting correctly kitted out for your aerial adventure, you will head out to the plane. In Devon and Coventry you'll be in the air for approximately 30 minutes, in West Sussex the flying time is around 20 minutes. You will be able to have a go yourself at taking control if you wish. Other have a go flying lessons are available nationwide.

Availability: Flights are available West Sussex all year round subject to weather conditions. Devon from April through to November and Coventry on selected Saturdays once a month.

Requirements: Minimum age for vintage Chipmunk flights is 12 (16 at Coventry), with the height range of 4'6" - 6'4" and a maximum weight is 16 stone.
Spectators and Facilities: Spectators are welcome to come and watch. Facilities are excellent at the West Sussex venue, including conference rooms and visitor viewing lounge. Devon has a Clubroom with catering facilities as well as teaching rooms. Coventry provides a comfortable viewing lounge with panoramic views of the runway as well as an outdoor area ideal for sunny days.
