Biplane Flights

Experiences Flash element

Take a trip back in time and enjoy flying a biplane such as a Tiger Moth, a true icon of the aviation world, at your choice of location throughout the UK. We also offer gift vouchers for flights in vintage aeroplanes other than the Tiger Moth - such as Chipmunks, Havards and sightseeing flights in DeHavilland Doves. Full range of flying experiences here.

Your flight experience in a vintage bi-plane begins with a welcome and safety briefing from your pilot. You will then be helped up into the cockpit and strapped into the snug interior of the biplane. Then comes the almost theatrical performance of "swinging the prop" - all necessary to get these marvellous vintage aircraft started and ready for take off! "Switches off, petrol on, throttle closed, suck in", followed by "contact", then with an almighty heave on the prop the engine will burst into life.

Even taxiing in biplanes such as the Tiger Moth is an art form, as the pilot weaves to and fro craning their neck to see where you are going. It's hard to explain the exhilaration of take-off in a vintage aircraft  like this, as it shudders and purrs, eager to get airborne. The windscreen does a very good job of keeping the breeze to a minimum and once up and away you will quickly get used to the Tiger Moth's engine noise, which fades to a loud but comfortable rumble.

Your pilot will demonstrate a few gentle turns before letting you take control of the vintage aircraft for yourself. Taking the flight controls, you'll soon discover only the lightest touch is needed to keep the wings straight and level, or maintain height through a turn.

Any signs of enthusiasm for your vintage aircraft fight will be met with the offer to demonstrate more exciting manoeuvres, even a loop, if the aircraft is cleared for aerobatics. IntotheBlue proudly offers vintage Spitfire flights in an adjacent helicopter, a great way to witness the majestic and memorable Spitfire fly alongside you close enough to see the pilot smile.

The biplanes used for these flights vary, with Tiger Moths and Stampes being used. Please see the table below for more details. The flight times quoted are 'chock to chock', so run from taxiing out to when you stop after landing. All flights will include a pre flight briefing in addition to your chosen flight time of 20, 30 or 40 minutes.

The Kent and Gloucestershire venues offer flights in vintage biplanes all year round (according to weather conditions). Flights from Goodwood take place on weekdays only. All other venues operate between March and October.

There is a minimum height limit of 4'6" and a maximum of 6'4" for all flights in vintage aircraft. Maximum weight limits range from 16 to 18 stone, please see locations below for venue specific weight limits. Prolonged periods of inactivity, air pressure changes, G pressure changes, turbulence, noise and light levels experienced during flights in open cockpit vintage aircraft may affect certain medical conditions. Any passenger with any doubts about their health when flying should seek medical advice. You are advised to wear warm comfortable clothing. This is another very popular experience gift from IntotheBlue, please visit our main gift ideas page for more amazing gift suggestions suitable for family and friends of all ages!

Friends and family are welcome to come and watch, time can usually be made to pose for photographs. Facilities vary from site to site.  The venue in Cambridge is based at the Imperial War Museum at Duxford Airfield and entry to the museum is included, with a reduced entry rate is available for accompanying friends and family.

Customer Reviews

My husband Paul loved his flight in a Tiger Moth plane and I am now looking at what I can get him next!
Sue, by email, 6/10/11

The Tiger Moth flight was great fun. The view from the open cockpit was fabulous, especially when we cruised past a pair of eagles soaring nearby. My first loop ever in a biplane with an open cockpit and the world went spinning around but by time we got to the third I could follow what the pilot was doing and enjoy the aerobatics. We even did some rolls and steep stall turns which all feel very quick and seem to take place in a very short distance, as the agile little plane dives and soars at 50mph or so.

Tizi and her team are very reassuring and take good care of the passengers. At every stage you feel safe and confident that you will have a safe flight. They have a great set up in Gloucestershire that is a real treat for any aviation enthusiast.
David, who flew at our Gloucestershire venue.

My Tiger Moth flight in Nottingham was a complete surprise for my 40th birthday. I was thrilled at having the chance to achieve one of my lifetime ambitions! For me, Tiger Moths aren't that powerful, are really really noisy with the wind howling past you at 60mph in the open cockpit - in other words, totally impractical and pretty basic compared to modern trainers planes… but still rather incredible all the same. A real treat to be able to fly in one.
Simon, who flew a Tiger Moth in Nottingham for his 40th birthday.

We bought a flight in a Tiger Moth for my father's 80th birthday present. Myself and my children planned the surprise flight for him and he had no idea what was going on. On the day driving to the airfield in Northampton he kept trying to guess where he was going but we wouldn't tell. When we arrived it was a glorious day and the staff at the airfield treated him like royalty. He just kept saying 'I can't believe you have done this for me' and saying it was a birthday gift he'd 'never forget'.  Thank you to Into the Blue and all the team at Northampton for making this day very special for him and for us. Well worth every penny.

I bought an vintage bi-plane experience for my mum for her 80th birthday. She went up in the plane and thoroughly enjoyed it. We even bought her some Biggles goggles, scarf and Squadron Leader moustache for the trip. We were all in tears of laughter when she put it all on!
