Go Segway Riding in Cornwall at this unique venue! This has got to be our most unusual location for taking a Segway personal transporter for a spin; at the iconic Goonhilly Satellite Earth Station on the Lizard Peninsula in Cornwall - and we think you'll absolutely love it.
Goonhilly near Helston is a former telecommunications that was once on of the largest satellite stations in the world - and this is the very reason Segways are here, as in 2006 the gadgets were introduced so staff could move around the vast, private site and visitor centre quickly and easily. Since closing in 2008, Steve Farnell, the man behind Segways at Goonhilly, has turned segwaying into a tourist attraction at this fascinating location where you will literally zooming underneath 'Arthur' the huge dish measuring 35m in diameter.
How cool then, that you get to tour this amazing installation on an appropriately futuristic two-wheeled gadget. During the 90-minute experience you will ride both an on-road i2 Segway and the chunky X2 off-road version, giving you two excellent activities in one. You'll start with the road-going i2 in the dedicated training area with the speed limiter on so you can get used to the steering and controls. Once you're OK, the limiter is turned off and you'll be able to feel the speed of the Segway on the smooth tarmac private roads that criss cross the centre.
One extra touch to this activity that we love is the 'fastest lap' competition. You will be invited to perform a timed lap of a circuit on your zippy i2 Segway and you will be racing against the clock to post the best time on the leaderboard of women and men who have dared to push their Segwaying skills to the limit. Will you be top of the list of speedy Segway-ers?
Then it's time to swap the standard Segway for a fantastic cross country version. The X2 and Turf models have been beefed up especially for off road use and you'll be amazed at the sort of rugged terrain they can handle. And you can really push the transporters to their limits on the obstacle and assault course full of bumps, troughs and slaloms too.
We think this experience is more than just having a go at Segway riding in Cornwall - it's a very special venue on the Lizard peninsula that forged a notable relationship with these new-fangled personal transporters, as the team were utilising Segway PTs in a high-tech working environment in exactly the way these personal electric vehicles were meant to be used - and now you can have a taste of that too!
