On your steam train excursion in Lancashire, you'll enjoy a three course Sunday Lunch in the comfort and style of beautifully restored dining carriages pulled by a magnificent steam locomotive. Travel through the beautiful Irwell Valley in Pullman style coaches which have been lovingly restored for your comfort and enjoyment.

Your day starts as soon as you arrive at the beautifully restored period railway station (12.15pm for a 12.45pm departure). You are welcome to arrive early to view the station, Bury Transport Museum (off Castlecroft Road) or visit the station bar before boarding the immaculately restored vintage first class restaurant carriage.

The nostalgic steam rail journey will pass through some spectacular countryside, with all the smells and sounds of the steam train acting as a wonderful accompaniment to your meal. The train stops en route, allowing time for you to stretch your legs and take a closer look at the locomotive and chat to staff. Your journey finishes back at Bolton Street Station at 3.00pm.

What a way to make a special occasion unique! Please see our main steam trains page for more information on steam train trips.

The Sunday steam lunch experience lasts approximately two and a half hours and includes a three course lunch and coffee onboard vintage steam hauled Pullman coaches. The train leaves Bury Bolton Street station and travels around ten miles North to Rawtenstall via Ramsbottom, it then turns around and retraces it’s route South this time after passing through Bury the train heads East for around four miles to Heywood before turning around again and returning to Bury. The train will usually pause at intermediate stations giving guests the chance to stretch their legs. The total distance travelled is approximately 28 miles. Guests are welcome to arrive early to view the station. IntotheBlue has over 800 experiences available online, book your experience day activity now or to get a feel for the sheer range of gift suggestions available, please see our main gift ideas hub!
Steam lunch experiences operate on selected Sundays between April and December. During December the lunch will be from the Christmas Menu. The train usually boards at 1230 and returns at around 1500.  Please note that the provision of a steam locomotive is subject to availability and the operator reserves the right to substitute a diesel powered locomotive should circumstances dictate this to be necessary. Menus vary each month, samples are listed below but specific menus will be confirmed when you book.
The activities depart from and return to Bolton Street Station in Bury, easily accessible from the M66.
There are no age requirements. The station has wheelchair access however dining guests will need to be able to make their own way onto the carriages which unfortunately are not suitable for wheelchairs or pushchairs. No drinks are included with the meal other than after lunch coffee.
The ‘Trackside’ bar offers a selection of drinks and snacks to purchase at the station. The train offers a well stocked bar with house wine available from £13.00 per bottle. The dining coaches have been designated non-smoking in accordance with the wishes of the customers. The operator can advise visitors on local accommodation in the area.

My Dad has loved steam trains as long as I can remember. After their lunch he went up onto the footplate to have a closer look and get a little go! My Mum was worried his suit and white shirt would not survive, but he returned looking pristine! It was a fantastic present and they thoroughly enjoyed their day. The food was great, company friendly and top it all, it was a glorious sunny day. It could not have been more perfect.

This is the first time I have bought an activity gift voucher and I was looking for an original gift for my parents this Christmas. My father used to work on the railways as a fire man and the Sunday lunch steam train ride seemed like the perfect gift. The price was very reasonable and the sample menus look appetising. I ordered the gift one evening after work and the voucher arrived three days later. Considering the disruptions to deliveries within the UK due to the snow, I was pleasantly surprise. The voucher had my personal message printed on it and came nicely packaged. Can't wait for Christmas morning!
Guest review on Reviewcentre.com Christmas 2010

We were struggling to find the ideal present for some friends' Ruby weeding anniversary. We knew of his love for steam trains, so started there first. We then thought she would appreciate not cooking...so we are hoping they will both enjoy our gift of a steam train Sunday lunch. I found it quite easy to sort too, it was just a case of the others contributing to the gift.

I was so pleased when I found the perfect 70th birthday present for our friend Derek. A weekend in Lancashire and a journey on a steam train with Sunday Lunch as well! We all had a wonderful weekend and enjoyed every minute on the train; a choice of menu, hot, tasty food, excellent service, a guide to tell us about the places of interest. The only hiccup was it wasn't Derek's 70th - he was only 69!
